Obama yesterday: Egypt not an Ally
Telemundo, a lefty Spanish-language network, asked yesterday to Obama about Egypt giving the current turmoil in the Middle East. Obama said: “I don’t think that we would consider them an ally, but we don’t consider them an enemy.”
Obama State Dept. today: Egypt IS an Ally Despite what Obama Says
Obama’s own State Department reaffirmed today that Egypt is an ally even though Obama said quite the opposite yesterday.
Transcript:

REPORTER: So, forget about the President’s words. You’re saying that the Administration and the State Department still regard Egypt as a major non-NATO ally, and it is still a recipient of all the privileges that that entails?

STATE DEPT. OFFICIAL: Yes.

CNSNews gives us the facts:

Fourteen countries around the world have been designated “major non-NATO allies” by U.S. administrations since 1989.

They include longstanding defense treaty partners, such as Japan, South Korea and Australia, and countries with whom the U.S. does not have such arrangements, like Egypt and Pakistan.

The full list:

1989 (President H.W. Bush): Egypt, Israel, Australia, Japan, South Korea

1996-1998 (President Bill Clinton): Jordan, New Zealand, Argentina

2003-2004 (President George W. Bush): Philippines, Bahrain, Thailand, Kuwait, Morocco, Pakistan
