Daniella Levine Cava Used her Tax-Funded Foundation to Pay Lobbyists & Herself? (2020 Candidate for Miami-Dade mayor)

Posted by FactReal on November 3, 2020

SUMMARY
– Levine Cava’s nonprofit foundation is partially taxpayer-funded.
– She paid herself $500,000 from year 2002 through 2012 (about $50K/year). In 2014, The Miami Herald analyzed this claim and did not refute it.
– In 2014, an ad ran stating:

Daniella Levine Cava’s foundation receives public tax dollars which she spends freely on staff, lobbyists, and consultants. Millions of dollars! Worse: Her partially taxpayer-funded foundation has paid her over $500,000 in salary — $500,000! Money that was supposed to go to her charity, went into her pocket. Daniella Levine Cava is very good at spending other people’s money. That’s why Miami-Dade county taxpayers can’t afford Cava.

ANALYSIS:
– She was getting paid to provide social services. So this was a job — nothing charitable or heroic.
– She is constantly touting her “wonderful record of service” of “helping low- and middle-income families through education and advocacy.” But she was doing it with other people’s money (in part with taxpayers money).
– Levine Cava has received numerous awards for her non-profit work (with other people’s money). Shouldn’t those awards/praises go to the taxpayers & donors who finance her foundation?
– She uses all this to promote herself and run for office.
– Levine Cava could have donated the $50K/year salary to people in need. Remember, Levine Cava is a multimillionaire.

NOTES TO PONDER:
– The Miami Herald article included the full statement from Cava’s campaign attacking the ad, but nowhere do Levine Cava or her campaign say the data from the ad is incorrect.
– The article did not say if Levine Cava used her foundation (funded in part by taxpayers) to pay lobbyists and consultants?
– Of course, the article defended Levine Cava by attacking her then-opponent, Lynda Bell.

DETAILS
– In 1996, Levine Cava founded her nonprofit, Catalyst Miami.
– In 2014, she resigned from the foundation to run for commissioner of Miami-Dade county.

REPORT:
In 2014 The Miami Herald did not refute the claim: [ archive.is/wV7HN ]

Fine print on the screen shows the $500,000 figure came from 10 years of federal tax returns. The reference is to Catalyst Miami, a social-services organization that Cava left before running for [Lynda] Bell’s District 8 seat. The two most recent tax returns for Catalyst (officially called the Human Services Coalition of Dade County) record Cava earning $38,900 in 2012 and $55,593 in 2011. This year [2014], Catalyst is slated to receive a $110,000 grant from Miami-Dade. […]

If Catalyst paid Cava $500,000 over 10 years (the ad says “over $500,000”) that would be an average of $50,000 a year.
